A little over a week ago, the GameStop made an announcement on the social media platform X that “THE CLASSICS ARE BACK” and that “New Retro GameStops are spawning near you” with a link to the retro store locations. This post now has over 33k likes and 6.6k bookmarks, so I think this means people are excited! You can search the GameStop website for Retro Gaming by Console. This includes Nintendo DS, Wii, WiiU, SNES, NES, Nintendo 64, Nintendo GameCube, Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, PlayStation, PS2, PS3, PSVita, Sega Genesis, Sega Saturn, Dreamcast, Xbox, and Xbox 360. To our surprise, Atari is left out.

GameStop used to have a few retro games in each store, but now they will choose a select GameStop that already exists in each region to have a larger selection of retro games. So now if you happen to be looking for a retro game, you can’t just browse any GameStop, but instead, you can search on their website for the location nearest you that they chose to have a concentrated selection of retro games. This can be seen as a good thing or a bad thing depending on your preference. I think it’s an interesting idea and makes sense to try to have a few more specific retro game stores instead of keeping them scattered about randomly.

We've checked out our closest GameStop and we only really saw Xbox 360/PS3 generation titles, as well as a case of Nintendo DS games. This was pretty cool, but nothing to write home about. They said hopefully they'd be getting some more stock in soon and to keep an eye out. The roll out of retro titles seems to be very slow as of now, but we'd imagine over time these select stores should have a nice selection to choose from. We're wondering if Gamestop will overvalue or undervalue the really rare games and we're also curious to learn if employees will be trained to spot unofficial knockoffs as well.
